About The Artist
Matthew Taylor received his B.F.A. in Metalsmithing from the renowned Maine College of Art. His thesis, authored in 1993, is titled "Moving Metals: Raising and Anticlastic Raising". Matt’s work at the M.C.A. helped to introduced the art world to his considerable talents for working in three-dimensional form with metals. These talents furthered by his ability to free-form carve jewelry and other sculptures in wax-relief prior to casting them in metals.
Matthew studied Anticlastic Raising under the tutelage of Master Metalsmith and founder of the "Shell Structures" school of metalsmithing, Heikki Seppa. Seppa, a native of Finland, is a master of the art of sculpting metal by stretching it slowly with a mallet and stake.
Matthew has also studied with Tim McCreight, renowned metalsmith and author. McCreight, who oversaw the completion of Matthew’s thesis, contributes a wide body of art to the world of metalsmithing, and is a former president of the Society of North American Goldsmiths and the department head of the metals program at the Maine College of Art.
